The Improvement and Development Agency for local government (I&DeA) works for local government improvement so councils can serve people and places better.
As a central part of this work, the Communities of Practice (CoP) programme was established to encourage the stimulation and sharing of best practice across all aspects of local government.
Our brief was to create an innovative new site that would form the hub of the CoP programme, using a wide range of the latest web techniques to create a powerful community-building environment.
The site had to be simple and straightforward enough for everyone in local government to use without training on the site - a significant challenge given the range of services required.
Our solution binds a wide range of services into an approachable, easy to use environment. Communities can be private or public, each community can have unlimited sub-communities, and all communities can select from a set of core features. These include forums, a document library, a wiki, an event calendar, member blogs and a member directory.
Each member has a central user profile, and a ‘People Finder’ facility allows each member to find others within selectable areas of interest, including a feature to simply ‘find people like me’.
Response has been excellent, with hundreds of communities established over the first few months spanning thousands of members. As more staff are brought into CoP programmes, the projection is that there will be thousands of thriving communities over the next few years.
