A resurgent force in the current-affairs magazine market, the New Statesman commissioned us to create an entirely new website that would both establish them as a potent online publisher and, more importantly, would propel subscriptions to the magazine.

Historically, the New Statesman website had carried a small selection of articles from the magazine, and had carried minimal online-only content. The new site is founded on bolder principles: every piece of content from the magazine is published to the site on a weekly basis to coincide with the release of that week’s issue.

Magazine content is supported by a range of online-only features, plus a broad set of blogs, polls and other interactive tools. Everything is free, moving the site to an open, confident model founded on the understanding that the web neither replaces nor threatens the printed magazine: exposing the quality of the content via the web will drive people to buy the magazine, which remains the more appropriate format for reading at leisure.

The design approach is bold and distinctive: it brings the site within the New Statesman brand personality, and positions it squarely among other leading online publishers.

Templates were constructed to the highest accessibility standards, and were written to integrate easily with the New Statesman’s bespoke in-house publishing system.

The end result? Search engine rankings have soared solely due to the increase in natural search visibility. Traffic is growing steadily, almost doubling its pre-launch levels within six weeks. Subscriptions to the magazine, the key measure of success for the site, have seen a 400% increase in the same period.
