Understanding information architecture:

Why an objective approach to design can lead to higher creative standards and more relevant solutions.

  • Every creative route is substantiated, making it easier for internal teams to make effective decisions and clear recommendations to senior project sponsors. This alone can be crucial to the successful implementation of any project.
  • Solutions founded on strong information architecture can be designed for the long-term. As digital channels settle and become the normal method of communicating with stakeholders, providing long-term stability in structure and hierarchy will be essential. Few things irritate regular site users more than a fundamental redesign to achieve (in their eyes) little or no benefit.

Information architecture has long been a central component of our design approach. We believe it is fundamental to achieving end results that deliver genuine benefit to both organisations and stakeholders alike.

In practice, successfully employing information architecture-based design comes down to the philosophy and skills of the project design team. Specialist information architects have a valuable role to play, but are members of the creative team and work as an integral part of it.

We apply this approach to projects of all types. It is a central component of our approach: a large part of the 'science' that is applied to each project.

Remember, even the most 'creative' projects benefit from the additional design dimension that information architecture provides: it is hard to imagine a project that would not benefit from a clearer, simpler design that is easily understood by all the people it is aimed at.
